New Series of Toned Paper Portrait Drawing Videos!

Artist Justin Maas is known for his incredible portrait drawings that he creates on toned paper. Justin has a way of making his drawings extremely dimensional by using both lights and darks on our Toned Tan paper, which has a neutral mid-tone value. This lets him render highlights and shadows, making his portraits pop.

In this 3 video series, Justin will show you the supplies he uses, then demonstrate his techniques. Here's a look at what Justin covers in each video:

Video 1: HOW TO DRAW TONED PAPER PORTRAITS - INTRODUCTION

In video 1, Justin gives an overview of Toned paper and why an artist may choose to use it. Instead of only rendering darker values like you would on a traditional white sheet of paper, you can add darks and lights since the paper has a mid-tone background. It helps save the artist time and also creates unique effects.

Justin is using our new 400 Series Toned Tan Mixed Media paper, which is heavyweight at 184lb (300gsm). It comes in both Tan & Gray, has a medium drawing surface, and is manufactured to withstand wet media applications.

Video 2: HOW TO DRAW TONED PAPER PORTRAITS: MATERIALS NEEDED

In video 2 Justin covers materials needed to create portraits on toned paper and shows how to select photos of subjects that lend themselves well to portrait drawing on toned paper based on highlights, shadows and angles.

Video 3: HOW TO DRAW TONED PAPER PORTRAITS: DEMONSTRATION

In the last video of the series, Justin demonstrates a portrait on toned paper from start to finish while narrating his tips and techniques along the way.
