Industrial Design on Toned Blue Paper with Reid Schlegel

Watch as Industrial Designer Reid Schlegel demonstrates his ideation sketching with pens and markers on Strathmore Toned Blue Mixed Media paper.

He starts with a series of rough ideas that feed off of each other until he's ready to create his final design. To start the composition of his final rendering, Reid lays down a light under layer sketch using a gray marker until he's happy with the shape. Then he begins base lines with ink, and continues to add details with a mix of markers, ink, colored pencil and white gel pen.

MORE ABOUT TONED PAPER

Starting your artwork using mid-range color allows for unique sketching & drawing possibilities by providing the middle value that would otherwise need to be rendered by the artist.  A wider range of values from light to dark can be used, and the middle tone makes it easier for the artist to deliberately place shadows and highlights.

Keeping the value of the paper as one of the values in the drawing not only saves time, but allows the artist to use graphite or other dark media to push darker values and white pencils or other light media to add highlights, making sketches and drawings pop.

Our Toned papers are 100% recycled, contain 30% post-consumer fiber, and also contain kraft and bark fiber inclusions which adds visual interest.

We carry Toned Sketch pads in tan and gray, and Toned Mixed Media pads in tan, gray and blue:

Toned Sketch:
In 4 sizes of wirebound sketchbook format, this 80lb (118gsm) toned paper in tan and gray is perfect for light and dark dry media and markers.

Toned Mixed Media:

In 4 sizes of glue bound pads, this heavyweight, 184lb (300gsm) tan, gray and blue paper is made for both wet and dry media. It has the vellum finish of a drawing sheet for mediums like colored pencil and graphite, and the weight and internal sizing of a watercolor paper for wet media applications.
