Artist Interview - Laura Schrampfer

Who are you and what do you do?
Laura Schrampfer, professional doodler and tattoo artist
Why do you do what you do?
I simply feel the need to create, it’s in my blood. I think I would implode if I didn’t! It’s the most challenging, frustrating, and rewarding experience to create art and push yourself to try new things.
How and when did you get into art?
Ever since I could hold a pencil/brush I've been pushing paint around, or whatever I could find! From doodling all over my math homework to giving my friends sharpie tattoos!
How has your practice changed over time?
I went from painting on canvas to inking skin. It was a natural progression for me, I always wanted a job that involved art. Becoming a tattoo artist and learning one of the most ancient art forms has been a very humbling experience. Someone permanently wearing your art is a pretty amazing feeling.
What’s your favorite piece of art that you’ve created? Why?
“Black Stallion” - it is an homage to my childhood, one of my favorite movies growing up.
What’s the best piece of art advice you’ve been given?
KISS- Keep It Simple Stupid. I have learned this applies to many aspects of life, not just art. A great saying to stop overthinking, keep on track, and focus on what is important.
What’s one art tip or technique you can share with us that you find really helpful?
Bob Ross by far “We don’t make mistakes. We just have happy accidents.” Some of my favorite pieces happened because of a “mistake” I made. Just go with it - you might like it! Or you might hate it and that’s okay too. It’s okay to fail, that's how we learn!
What art materials could you not live without?
Ticonderoga erasable carmine red pencils, I live for them! They are so great for sketching ideas in their beginning stages.
