Artist Interview - Kasiq Jungwoo
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Kasiq Jungwoo, an illustrator mainly using watercolour, based in South Korea.
Why do you do what you do?
Being an illustrator, this has been my profession for many years but was also my old hobby. I have always been fascinated by creating something. I was fortunate enough to keep doing this as a profession.
You use so many colors, do you have any that you favor?
I like in specific some attractive colours realised from mixtures of blue and green
What inspires your art?
I often get inspired from my daily life by looking at some gestures and facial expressions of my wife, kids, and people passing by with their wearing and walks.
How and when did you get into art?
Painting had been my hobby since childhood. It began rather naturally with some doodles on the textbooks that I often did during class hours. It was never to be a serious entry but evolved naturally in the course of ordinary days.
How has your practice changed over time?
I practice in several ways. I repeat drawing and painting by using various materials and papers. In the course of practice, I got to know the materials and papers that best fit me and became much clearer with what I do and what I like.
What’s your favorite piece of art that you’ve created? Why?
My favourite piece keeps changing every day. Today I like this piece most (as per the attached).
Many faces are found and seen here including several facial expressions. These are seen even differently according to my daily mood. It gives me some different feeling each time: the eyes are closed but they look open to me; some smiles and colours are found from this monochrome piece. Presumably, I was in such a mood when I worked this piece.
What’s the best piece of art advice you’ve been given?
I was told that "quantity transforms into quality when the time comes." I have a strong belief that if you keep repeating and continue to paint, your piece will naturally turn into a good one.
What’s one art tip/technique you can share with us that you find really helpful?
I often paint by not completely mixing colour paints, which brings a certain coincidence that allows me to encounter some surprising colours that come out regardless of my willingness.
Do you have any secret tips or techniques you use to salvage a piece when you make a mistake?
I replace only the mistaken part with a new painting in part. It could show and noticeable but sometimes such an awkwardness that exceptionally sticks out can be even appealing.
What is your favorite Strathmore paper? Why?
I like Strathmore 200 Series Watercolor Paper in terms of lightness, softness, and easiness to handle.
What art materials could you not live without?
Watercolour brushes and paints that I have long been using as main materials so far.
What types of colors are you drawn to for your art and why?
I am very much attracted to sepia colour. I think it is the closest colour to nature, soil, and people. When I draw people, I always use the colour either as the base or by mixing it with other colours.
Who are your biggest influences (or who were when you started doing art)?
I adore Andy Warhol particularly with his colours and line drawings.
What’s the most common art-related question you get from your followers?
Most of cases they wanted to improve thus asking for how to do it. My answer has always been ‘just keep doing and practicing’. You do paint not only when you get inspired but also when you are in ordinary mood too.
